Microsoft is planning to unveil the “next generation of Windows” at an event set for June 24th. The software giant started sending out invites for a Microsoft Event a week after CEO Satya Nadella teased the announcement.

“Soon we will share one of the most significant updates to Windows of the past decade to unlock greater economic opportunity for developers and creators. I’ve been self-hosting it over the past several months, and I’m incredibly excited about the next generation of Windows. Our promise to you is this: we will create more opportunity for every Windows developer today and welcome every creator who is looking for the most innovative, new, open platform to build and distribute and monetize applications. We look forward to sharing more very soon.”

Microsoft is expected to announce significant changes to the Operating System, which will likely include UI changes, visual enhancements. We might also see changes to the Windows Store, like allowing developers to submit any Windows application, and rumors have suggested Microsoft will open its store up to all apps and rival payment platforms. Microsoft has been focusing on improving the basic functions of Windows, File Explorer improvements and new system file icons doing away with the Windows 95-style icons. The event invite also appears to tease a new Windows logo.

Last week, Microsoft confirmed that Windows 10X, the Operating System they built for dual-screen devices, will no longer be shipped. Instead, the company will be rolling out the best parts of Windows 10X to the main version of Windows 10.

Both Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Chief Product Officer Panos Panay will be presenting at the Microsoft event. Microsoft’s Windows event will start at 11AM ET / 6PM EAT on June 24th. TechED Africa will be covering the event, so stay tuned for the latest.
