Apple Taps Google’s Gemini to Power the Next Generation of Siri

In a move that signals a major shift in the artificial intelligence landscape, Apple and Google have announced a landmark multi-year partnership that will place Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models at the core of Apple’s next generation of AI features, including a significantly upgraded Siri set to launch later this year.

Under the agreement, Apple’s upcoming Apple Foundation Models will be built on Google’s Gemini AI and cloud computing technology. These models will power Apple Intelligence, the company’s new AI layer designed to bring more natural, context-aware, and personalized experiences across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

In a joint statement, the two companies said Apple chose Gemini after an extensive evaluation process.

After careful evaluation, Apple determined that Google’s AI technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for Apple users.

Joint Statement from Apple and Google

The most immediate impact of the partnership will be seen in Siri. Apple has been working on a more advanced, AI-powered version of its voice assistant, first previewed at the company’s Worldwide Development Conference (WWDC) in 2024. That upgrade was delayed, fueling speculation that Apple was struggling to keep pace with competitors in the fast-moving AI space.

By adopting Gemini as the underlying intelligence layer, Apple is now able to leapfrog some of those challenges. Gemini’s strengths in natural language understanding, reasoning, and multimodal input are expected to give Siri a major boost in conversational ability, contextual awareness, and task execution.

Rather than relying solely on internally developed models, Apple is taking a hybrid approach: combining Google’s world-class AI technology with Apple’s tightly integrated hardware and software ecosystem.

Apple Keeps Control of Privacy and User Experience

Despite the deep partnership, Apple remains in full control of how AI operates on its devices. The company confirmed that Apple Intelligence will continue to run either directly on users’ devices or through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute system.

This architecture ensures that personal data is not stored or used to train external models. Requests processed in the cloud are handled in a secure, privacy-preserving environment designed specifically for Apple’s AI workloads. In short, Google provides the intelligence engine, but Apple controls how that intelligence is delivered, processed, and protected.

Where This Leaves ChatGPT and Other AI Partners

Apple has already announced a separate partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into certain Apple Intelligence features. The new Gemini agreement, however, places Google’s models at the center of Apple’s core AI strategy.

While it’s still unclear how these two systems will coexist, the structure suggests that Gemini will power Apple’s foundational intelligence, while ChatGPT may continue to be used for specific features such as content generation or advanced conversational queries. This multi-model approach gives Apple flexibility while avoiding dependence on any single AI provider.

A Strategic Alliance with Long-Term Impact

For Google, this partnership puts Gemini inside hundreds of millions of Apple devices, making it one of the most widely deployed AI systems in consumer technology.

For Apple, it provides an immediate upgrade to its AI capabilities without sacrificing privacy, platform control, or user trust. Rather than competing in isolation, the two tech giants are now combining their strengths: Google’s leadership in AI models and Apple’s dominance in consumer hardware and ecosystem design.

As for Apple Intelligence, users will get the first real glimpse of what this alliance can deliver. If successful, it could redefine what people expect from AI on their everyday devices.
