Months after Netflix announced it would offer up a cheaper ad-supported tier for its streaming service, we finally have some official concrete details. Netflix announced today, the plan — officially called “Basic With Ads” — will launch in 12 countries, starting November 3, 2022.

Basic with Ads will cost $6.99 a month in the US, the UK at £4.99, Canada at CAD $5.99 (starting November 1), and Australia at AUD $6.99 (starting November 4). The other countries will include Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Spain.

Netflix’s current plans and members will not be impacted. Basic with Ads complements their existing ad-free Basic, Standard and Premium plans. Basic with Ads offers all the features subscribers expect from Netflix’s Basic plan, with a few differences: Video quality is capped at 720p/HD (now for both Basic with Ads and Basic plans). There will be an average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour; a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions that Netflix says it’s currently working on, and subscribers will not be able to download content to their devices. Netflix says the ads will be 15 or 30 seconds long, which will play before and during shows and films.

Netflix is betting that this new plan will likely bring back a lot of former Netflix subscribers who have had to deal with price increases in the streamer’s ad-free plans. The streaming giant expects to launch in more countries over time.
