If you’ve watched Iron Man or Spider-Man: Far From Home, you must have noticed these AIs, J.A.R.V.I.S. and E.D.I.T.H. Both models performed mind-blowing tasks. In 2025, that future is clearer than ever before. ChatGPT has integrated Shopify and Etsy into its chat conversation. This feature allows users to shop on either platform without leaving the chat. Think about that for a second: instead of bouncing between apps, searching, clicking links, or filling out endless checkout forms, you can now buy right inside the conversation.
Why is this important?
OpenAI is open-sourcing the technology behind Instant Checkout, known as the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Co-developed with Stripe and top merchant partners, this open standard for AI commerce allows AI agents, people, and businesses to work together to complete purchases securely and seamlessly. By making the protocol public, OpenAI is inviting developers and merchants everywhere to build their own integrations. That means anyone will be able to make sales or purchases through AI. This is good news for online sellers.
- Users can purchase items with Instant Checkout in chat.
- There are no extra charges for shoppers.
- Merchants pay a small fee to OpenAI only on completed purchases — so prices for customers don’t change.

This new approach gives OpenAI another revenue stream, beyond the traditional ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscriptions, while leveraging the high traffic the platform already attracts.
OpenAI confirmed in their blog post that U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and free users can now buy directly from Etsy sellers. Shopify’s huge network of merchants — over a million brands including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori — will be added soon.
Right now, Instant Checkout supports only single-item purchases, but OpenAI has promised that multi-item carts and global expansion are on the roadmap.
Even Etsy’s Chief Product & Technology Officer, Rafe Colburn, highlighted that this kind of AI-powered, agentic shopping opens massive opportunities for discovery and seamless buying experiences. Etsy is already working with a tech partner to integrate this deeper into mobile.
How OpenAI’s instant checkout works
When a user shares a shopping prompt such as “cute Christmas cardigan under $40” or “last-minute holiday gifts for coffee lovers”, the AI instantly scans across the web and displays the most relevant products. These results are organic and unsponsored, ranked only by what best matches the user’s request.
If the Christmas cardigan supports Instant Checkout, the process couldn’t be simpler. Shoppers just tap “Buy”, confirm their shipping and payment details, and complete the purchase—all without leaving the chat. ChatGPT Plus subscribers can even use their saved payment details instantly, while new buyers can check out using cards or express payment options.
Behind the scenes, merchants manage the order, payment, and fulfillment through their existing Shopify or Etsy stores. ChatGPT acts purely as the AI shopping assistant, securely connecting buyer and seller—much like a digital personal shopper.
For merchants, the setup is easy: they only pay a small fee on completed sales. For users, the service is free, doesn’t affect prices, and doesn’t influence how products appear. Instant Checkout items aren’t given preference. Instead, when several merchants sell the same Christmas cardigan, ChatGPT ranks them based on availability, price, quality, seller reputation, and checkout options, ensuring the best shopping experience.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol
At the heart of this new shopping experience is something called the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a system that helps AI agents (like ChatGPT) and businesses work together to complete a purchase for a user, safely and smoothly.
OpenAI developed this protocol in collaboration with Stripe and several major merchants to simplify, enhance, and secure online shopping through AI. It’s designed to:
- Work across different platforms, payment processors, and types of businesses.
- Connect quickly without merchants having to rebuild their systems.
- Keep merchants in full control of their customer relationships—from checkout and delivery to returns and support.
Here’s how it works: when someone places an order through ChatGPT, the AI securely sends all the needed details to the merchant’s system using the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The merchant then reviews the order, accepts or declines it, processes the payment with their existing provider, and handles shipping and customer service just like they normally would.
If a merchant already uses Stripe for payments, enabling these “agentic payments” takes as little as one line of code. Those using another payment provider can still participate by utilizing Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or the Delegated Payments Spec in the Agentic Commerce Protocol, eliminating the need to switch systems or make major changes.
