Netflix Launches Free Plan in Kenya.

The streaming wars continue. Companies have been coming up with ways to bring in new audiences to their platforms and this time, Netflix is betting on a new move. The global streaming giant is launching a free plan exclusive to Kenya starting today. Netflix is counting on this plan to get users upgrade to a full paid subscription. Now, of course, it does come with a few drawbacks: The plan will be available only on Android phones, the content will be limited and you won’t be able to download any movies or series. On the plus side, it will be ad free.

“At Netflix, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the suspense of Blood & Water, the romance of Bridgerton and the adventure of Army of the Dead. Now we’re giving audiences in Kenya the chance to experience these stories for themselves — completely free of charge. This is a great way to experience our service. And if you like what you see, it’s easy to upgrade to one of our paid plans so you can enjoy our full catalog on your TV or laptop as well.”

When you sign-up, Netflix will not require any payment information from you. All you have to do is enter your email, confirm you are 18 or over and create a password. You will be able to access Netflix’s content — a quarter of its paid streaming plan — as well as parental controls, and add up to five profiles (including kids). The content that will not be available on the free plan will have a lock icon, and to watch that, you have to upgrade to a paid subscription plan.

The free plan will start rolling out in Kenya today over the next few weeks. The company didn’t disclose how long it plans to offer this free plan in Kenya — and whether it is considering expanding this offer to other countries.
