Google has officially announced the Pixel 9a, and while it didn’t come as a surprise (thanks to leaks galore), it still brings enough upgrades to make it one of the best budget smartphones out there. With a fresh design, a bigger and brighter display, and a solid AI-powered camera system, the Pixel 9a is here to give Apple’s budget offering a run for its money.
The Pixel 9a ditches the camera bump and opts for a flush, sleeker design, making it more visually in line with the premium Pixel 9 series. It’s available in four colors: Obsidian, Porcelain, Peony, and the brand-new Iris. The display has also received a notable upgrade. At 6.3 inches, it’s bigger than the 6.1-inch panel on the Pixel 8a, but the phone itself remains nearly the same size, even shedding a bit of weight. More importantly, it’s brighter than ever, peaking at 2,700 nits (a 35% improvement over the 8a) and maintaining a smooth 120Hz refresh rate—something Apple’s $599 iPhone 16E still lacks.
The Pixel 9a features an upgraded dual-camera system, with a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide sensor. It’s also the first A-series device to include Macro Focus, letting you capture intricate details up close. Of course, Google’s AI-powered photography tools are here too, including Add Me, which combines two group photos so no one gets left out, and Best Take, which seamlessly blends different facial expressions from multiple shots for the perfect group photo. Magic Editor with Auto Frame automatically reframes photos, expands backgrounds, and lets you make creative edits like changing seasons or adding elements. Other features like Magic Eraser, Audio Magic Eraser, Night Sight, Astrophotography, and Night Sight Panorama ensure your photos look stunning in any situation.
Battery life has been bumped up to over 30 hours, with Extreme Battery Saver extending it to 100 hours. The Pixel 9a also levels up in durability with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, meaning it can handle deeper water immersion than its predecessors. The 5,100mAh battery should offer plenty of endurance, and the phone includes an optical fingerprint sensor for added security. And let’s not forget seven years of OS and security updates—a longevity commitment that keeps your device secure and up-to-date for nearly a decade.
The Pixel 9a is the only phone in its price range featuring Gemini Nano, Google’s on-device AI assistant. Gemini integrates with Google apps like Maps, Calendar, and YouTube, making multitasking easier. It also supports Gemini Live, which enables real-time voice interaction for brainstorming or practicing speeches. Soon, Gemini Advanced subscribers will be able to use Gemini Live for video and screen sharing, taking AI assistance to a whole new level.
Pixel 9a doesn’t just deliver on hardware and AI; it also ensures security and parental controls. Google Family Link allows parents to manage their child’s phone usage with screen time limits, app approvals, and privacy settings. School Time reduces distractions during school hours, and Google Wallet for Kids, rolling out in select countries, allows kids to make safer transactions while parents maintain oversight. Call Assist features like Hold for Me, Direct My Call, and Call Screen add further convenience. In case of emergencies, Car Crash Detection and Theft Protection provide extra security, while Find My Device lets you share your live location for added peace of mind.
The Pixel 9a starts at $499 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with a 256GB model available for $599. While Google hasn’t specified the exact release date, rumors point to an April launch. As we get closer, expect even more leaks to surface. With its class-leading camera, AI smarts, durability improvements, and seven-year software support, the Pixel 9a is shaping up to be the best budget phone of 2025—and maybe even beyond. Sorry, Apple, but the $599 iPhone 16E might have some explaining to do.
