Apple has introduced the second generation of its over-ear headphones, AirPods Max 2, delivering incremental upgrades to noise cancellation, audio performance, and intelligent features while retaining the same design and price point as the original model.
The announcement comes just weeks after Apple’s latest product event, where it unveiled updates including the iPhone 17e and new Mac hardware. In contrast, AirPods Max 2 were revealed more quietly via a newsroom update, marking a low-key debut for a long-awaited refresh.
A long-awaited update to a 2020 design
AirPods Max 2 represent the first major update to the original AirPods Max since their release in 2020. While Apple previously introduced a USB-C revision with minor changes and additional color options, the core design and hardware remained largely unchanged.
The new model continues that trend visually, maintaining the same aluminum construction and overall form factor. However, internally, Apple is bringing the over-ear lineup in line with newer AirPods models through the introduction of its H2 chip.
H2 chip brings improved performance
At the center of the update is the H2 chip, already used in products like the AirPods Pro 2. The upgrade replaces the H1 chip found in the original AirPods Max and enables a range of improvements across audio, noise cancellation, and voice processing.
Apple says AirPods Max 2 deliver up to 1.5 times more effective Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), alongside more advanced computational audio capabilities. Transparency mode has also been refined to sound more natural when blending external audio with playback.
The H2 chip also enhances call quality through improved voice isolation, using AI-based processing to better separate speech from background noise.
Enhanced audio and lossless support
Audio performance is further improved with the addition of a high dynamic range amplifier, which Apple says delivers cleaner, more detailed sound while maintaining the headphones’ signature tuning.
Spatial Audio has also been refined, offering improved instrument placement and a more consistent listening experience across content.
Like the USB-C version of the original model, AirPods Max 2 support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio via a wired USB-C connection, enabling higher-fidelity playback for music, video, and professional workflows in applications such as Logic Pro.
Reduced wireless latency is another focus, particularly for gaming. Apple says Game Mode on iOS, macOS, and iPadOS improves responsiveness when using the headphones.
Intelligent features and new use cases
With the H2 chip, AirPods Max 2 gain a suite of features already seen across the broader AirPods lineup. These include:
- Adaptive Audio, which dynamically adjusts noise control levels
- Conversation Awareness, which lowers volume when the user speaks
- Voice Isolation, for clearer calls
- Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence
- Siri interactions, including gesture-based responses
Apple is also positioning the headphones as tools for creators. New capabilities include studio-quality audio recording and a camera remote function, allowing users to control photo and video capture using the Digital Crown.
Familiar design in a competitive market
Despite the internal upgrades, the physical design remains largely unchanged. AirPods Max 2 retain the same build, weight, and overall aesthetic as their predecessor, and Apple has not indicated any updates to the included carrying case, which continues to draw mixed reactions for its minimalist design.
The headphones are available in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue, matching the color options introduced with the USB-C refresh.
Apple’s approach contrasts with competitors such as Sony and Bose, which have iterated more frequently on their flagship noise-canceling headphones. Recent models like the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra 2 have introduced notable advances in both performance and portability over multiple generations.
Pricing and availability
AirPods Max 2 will be available to order starting March 25, with shipping and retail availability expected in early April.
Pricing starts at $549, unchanged from the original AirPods Max, reinforcing Apple’s positioning of the update as an incremental upgrade rather than a redesign or price shift.
AirPods Max 2 bring the company’s over-ear headphones up to date with the broader AirPods ecosystem, particularly through the addition of the H2 chip and its associated features. However, the update remains focused on internal improvements rather than a comprehensive redesign.
As competition in the premium headphone market continues to intensify, the effectiveness of these upgrades, particularly in areas like noise cancellation, audio fidelity, and real-world usability, will likely determine how the new model is received.
