A look into the new OS for Samsung watches

Samsung held their MWC 2021 event today and all about their new WatchOS wasn’t left out of the event. The company is moving away from Tizen to a unified platform with Google as announced during the Google I/O event. This will come during their summer event which we expect to see the next foldable phone and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4.

Although it will be a unified platform which will be basically WearOS but redesigned by Samsung and Google to offer a better experience and battery life, they will be using their own skin, OneUI Watch which will be more connected to the Samsung mobile experience and will look alike with the Smartphones OneUI as well as display some of the features of your smartphone as is on the watch. This is their aim of making the watch feel closer to the Samsung ecosystem.

eSim support is being made at such a point that more carriers will accept the watch which will make it easier for you to walk around without the need for the phone and with integration with Google Play apps, you can be able to use your watch just like your phone like making calls, listening to music and also sending messages. The likes of Google maps will help during location and direction needs.

For watch faces, Samsung is working on a tool that will be available later and will make it easier for Android developers to design their own watch faces. This will not be exclusive to Samsung and Google and other brands are welcomed to use the all-new unified platform on their watches as well but Samsung’s own watch will be the first to use the platform.

Something to note is that Samsung is promising 3 years of updates and support to Tizen OS watches from the day they were launched.

For the iconic S-Pen used on the Galaxy Note series, Samsung is planning on bringing it to more flagship phones after the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The Galaxy Note might be coming to an end and most likely the Fold is the one to take over its place. So far many renders show the upcoming Fold with S-Pen support and now that Samsung has clarified that the Pen is coming to more flagships, it might be the way to go.

Samsung Unpacked event will be happening in less than two months and we shall see what is new for Samsung.
